Sustainability

The environment and our local community are at the forefront of every decision that we have made in building and maintaining Nkanyi House. We strive to support local businesses and community initiatives.

Nkanyi House is unique in being solar-powered. Our state-of-the-art solar system allows the house to be powered almost entirely from Limpopo’s abundant sunshine. This provides guests with dependable power and reduces damage to the environment. The house remains linked to the national grid, so that if there is a continuous lack of sun, combined with an excessive demand, the system will automatically change the house from solar power to the grid.

We also chose to be mindful of water consumption with the design of the home. The house contains both indoor and outdoor showers. However, we omitted bathtubs from the design, as bathing uses significantly more water than showering. The pool is always available for those who want to soak on a hot day. The indoor showers have water-saving shower heads.

We have also tried to limit the use of single-use plastics in the house. Our guest amenities are locally made using biodegradable products. We use refillable containers whenever possible. The kitchen is stocked with food saver containers to reduce the need for disposable plastic.

Guests to Nkanyi House are provided with our guide to the area, which includes information on unique ways to experience local culture, foods and shopping. We will let you in on the secrets to finding the best local artists and off-the-grid attractions.
